A new threat to MacOS has surfaced in the form of malware allowing attackers to hijack Mac users’ computers…
Known as Backdoor.MAC.Elanor by antivirus researchers from Bitdefender, it installs a backdoor that allows attackers full access to the core Mac system. This means it can command access to users’ data in addition to taking control of their webcam. “Elanor” installs itself via the “Easy Doc Converter.app” – a hoax file format converter which is surprisngly available for download from reputable sites for Mac applications.
MacUpdate listed EasyDoc Converter’s system requirements as Intel-based Macs running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or later. OS X Snow Leopard is compatible with Macs that have at least 1GB of RAM and 5GB of free disk space. Backdoor.MAC.Eleanor is thereby capable of infecting mid 2007 or newer MacBook models, all MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, mid 2007 or newer Mac mini and iMac models, and all Mac Pro models.
